I was a young Navy Petty Officer when I got my first experience with managing a budget and I had no idea what I was doing or how to go about but I jumped in headfirst and started to follow the process. If there is anything the military is good at it is following protocols and ensuring everyone fills out the right form. As the months went by, I soon learned the importance of having a clean paper trail, every year I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and never touched a penny of it. Every single trip I made to the “supply warehouse” to pick up office supplies for my department I filled out a triplicate piece of paper with numbers and letters and dollar amounts, then, I passed it on to the next person who would stamp and sign it; and when I returned to the ship I turned in that piece of paper to the “bean counters” who would track, file, and transfer the money.

Fast-forward to the last two years of my eight-year career while flying to my last duty station in Naples, Italy I was sitting next to a businessman who gave me the best advice that changed my life and future. As I was telling him why I chose this location because I could finish my college education, I asked if he had any words of wisdom for me. He told me to make sure I took some courses in finance and accounting, regardless of where I would end up in the future, he said I will always want to understand the flow of money.

After 20+ years in business administration I’ve seen my share of mistakes in the “paper trail”, from incorrect inventory tracking, missing invoices and overdue bills to unprepared tax documents for end of year closing.
